Hudson’s spring weather is serving up a little bit of everything — clouds, rain, a few rumbles of thunder, and just enough sunshine to keep us hopeful. Classic April vibes, really.
Let’s see what the week has in store ⬇️
- 🌥️ Friday, April 11 – Cloudy and cold. High: 42°F | Low: 36°F (A chilly day; keep that jacket handy.)
- ⛅ Saturday, April 12 – Chilly with clouds yielding to sun. High: 49°F | Low: 31°F (Morning clouds giving way to afternoon sun — a light jacket should do the trick.)

- ⛈️ Monday, April 14 – Thick clouds with rain and a possible thunderstorm in the afternoon. High: 64°F | Low: 41°F (Keep an eye on the sky — storms could bring hail and strong winds.)
- 🌧️ Tuesday, April 15 – Cloudy, windy, and chilly with scattered showers. High: 46°F | Low: 33°F (Definitely one of those "coat and coffee" kind of days.)
- 🌥️ Wednesday, April 16 – Decreasing clouds and chilly. High: 46°F | Low: 29°F (A clear but brisk day — bundle up if you're out early.)
- 🌤️ Thursday, April 17 – Warmer with a mix of sun and clouds. High: 53°F | Low: 41°F (A bit of sunshine makes a comeback — finally.)
A classic spring shuffle: clouds, showers, and the occasional surprise sunshine. Just another week in the great weather lottery of Northeast Ohio. 🌦️

🐾 It’s National Pet Day — Let’s See Those Cute Faces!
Today, April 11, is National Pet Day, and around here, that’s basically a major holiday. Whether your best buddy barks, meows, chirps, or slithers — today’s the day to spoil them rotten and celebrate all the love (and fur) they bring into your life.
National Pet Day was created back in 2006 to appreciate the pets we already have and raise awareness for the many still waiting for forever homes. So it’s a great day to treat your own fuzzy sidekick — and maybe support a local shelter while you’re at it.
As part of the fun, we want to see YOUR pets. Yep — we’re doing a full-on Scoop pet feature. Send us your favorite photo of your beloved sidekick (bonus points for silly faces, festive outfits, or general cuteness overload) and we might feature them in an upcoming issue!
📩 Send pet pics to: [email protected]
Let’s show off the paws, tails, feathers, and fins that make Hudson extra awesome. 🐶🐱🦜🐾
🐺 The De-Extinction of the Dire Wolf
Speaking of pets (or maybe not!), have you heard about this? It’s wild… quite literally.
Fans of Game of Thrones might want to sit down — because the dire wolves are back. No, not in a reboot. In real life!
A biotech company has used ancient DNA and gene-editing tech to create real-life pups with the traits of the long-extinct dire wolf — the same oversized, legendary wolves that inspired Ghost, Nymeria, and the rest of the Stark pack on screen.
But here’s the kicker: dire wolves weren’t just a fantasy creation. They actually roamed North and South America until about 13,000 years ago, when a mix of climate change and a dwindling food supply (think giant sloths and saber-toothed cats) led to their extinction.
The DNA used to recreate these wolves was extracted from a well-preserved dire wolf fossil discovered in permafrost — estimated to be over 15,000 years old. Scientists used this genetic material to identify and reconstruct key traits that made dire wolves unique.
These ancient predators weren’t your average wolves either. Dire wolves were bigger, heavier, and more muscular than the gray wolves we know today. Some stood up to 2.5 feet tall at the shoulder and weighed nearly 150 pounds — almost twice the size of your typical grey wolf! Think massive jaws, wide skulls, and thick legs built for power, not speed.
As for the modern pups? Say hello to Fenris and Freki — named after mythical wolves and born earlier this year. They’re currently about four months old and living at an undisclosed conservation site, where scientists are monitoring their growth, behavior, and health. So far, they’re thriving.
This is one of the most mind-blowing things happening in science right now. Next up: woolly mammoths, the Tasmanian tiger, and the dodo bird. We aren't kidding! No dragons (yet), but dire wolves are a pretty epic start. Winter is coming...❄️

🥎 Hudson Softball Takes Solon to Extra Innings
It was a wild ride on Wednesday night as Hudson softball went the distance — and then some — in a tight conference matchup against Solon. After nine innings of back-and-forth action, the Explorers fell just short, with Solon taking the 8–7 win on their home field.
Hudson brought the heat late in the game, staging a huge 5-run rally in the seventh inning to even things up and force extras. Offensively, they were solid across the board with 11 hits and 7 RBIs as a team.
Standout performances:
- Claire Eland (So) notched 2 hits and 2 RBIs, and pitched all 8 innings, recording 6 strikeouts.
- Bailey Deutsch (Jr) continued her hot streak, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
- Gianna Pirtle (Jr) smacked a double and scored a run.
The game was a battle from start to finish, and while the scoreboard didn’t tilt in Hudson’s favor this time, the grit and resilience on display were undeniable. Extra innings. Extra heart. 💙
🏃♀️ Explorers Track & Field Races Past Twinsburg
Hudson’s girls track & field team pulled off a strong 75–55 win over Twinsburg on Tuesday, showing off depth, grit, and plenty of team spirit.
Sejal Bhatia dominated the hurdles, winning both the 100m and 300m events, while Ellie Miele flew through the 200m in 25.40 seconds. Hudson’s relays were unstoppable too, with wins in the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400.
In the distance events, Maddie Halford, Eleanor Collins, and Lila Price swept the 3200m, and Katie Will placed in both the 800m and the closing relay. Madeline Meacham brought the power in discus and shot put, and the pole vault crew — Makenna Bode, Genevieve Baylor, and Shea Broski — swept their event entirely.
Coach Jeff Hildebrand said it best: “This is why we win. This culture is who we are.” 💙
🏐 Hudson Boys’ Volleyball Goes the Distance in Back-to-Back Battles
It’s been a tough stretch of close calls for Hudson’s boys’ volleyball team, but they’ve been showing grit and playing with heart every step of the way.
On Tuesday, they faced off against Jackson and came out swinging, forcing a thrilling four-set match that included a marathon first set (32–30!). Despite a strong defensive effort — led by Sam Disney with 11 digs — Jackson edged out the win with final scores of 32–30, 25–22, 16–25, and 25–19.
Then came Wednesday’s road match against Brunswick, and it was another nail-biter. Hudson jumped out to a 2–0 lead, taking the first two sets 25–11 and 25–18, but Brunswick stormed back to win the next three. Final tally: 3–2 in favor of the Blue Devils.
Still, Hudson’s stat lines were loaded with highlights:
- Owen Stearns led all hitters with 21 kills
- Fisher Zappone added 15 kills and 14 digs
- Christian Renna knocked down 10 kills and had a hitting percentage of .391
- Jason Battaglia set the tone with 46 assists and 16 digs
- Sam Disney racked up another 15 digs and 32 serve receptions
This team’s fight is undeniable — and as the season rolls on, so does their potential. Let’s keep showing up for them, Hudson!
