☀️ The Scoop on Hudson Weather

Hope you packed an umbrella this morning, because Monday’s rolling in with rumbles. But don’t worry—by midweek, we’re back in full summer mode. It’s a classic Ohio stretch ahead: a little thunder, a little sun, and just enough breeze to make the garden flag flutter.

  • ⛈️ Monday, June 9 – 69°/56° (Thunderstorms): Wet start to the week. Keep rain boots and patience close by.
  • 🌤️ Tuesday, June 10 – 73°/56° (Partly Cloudy): A breather with milder skies—great day to dry out your porch cushions.
  • ☀️ Wednesday, June 11 – 81°/63° (Sunny): Absolutely gorgeous. Might be the best day of the week—plan something outside.
  • 🌤️ Thursday, June 12 – 83°/63° (Partly Cloudy): Warm and easy. Perfect evening for the Preview Party at the Home & Garden Tour.
  • 🌧️ Friday, June 13 – 79°/63° (PM Showers): Morning looks good, but pack an umbrella if you're touring gardens in the afternoon.
  • ⛈️ Saturday, June 14 – 78°/62° (Scattered Thunderstorms): Summer storms could roll through—fingers crossed for breaks in between!
  • ⛈️ Sunday, June 15 – 75°/61° (Isolated Thunderstorms): A little moody, but not a total washout. Keep your plans flexible.

Looks like Wednesday’s your golden hour this week—get outside and soak it up!

📰 Fresh Off the Clocktower

🌕 Don’t Miss the Strawberry Moon Tuesday Night!

Heads up, sky fans—literally. On Tuesday evening, June 10, the Strawberry Moon will rise over Hudson, and it’s bringing some serious moon magic.

This isn’t just a regular full moon. Thanks to a rare lunar standstill (the kind that only comes around every 18.6 years), this one will sit lower on the horizon than any full moon in nearly two decades. That means it’ll look bigger, more golden, and—let’s be honest—downright stunning.

Here’s what to know:

  • 🌅 Catch it just after sunset—around 8:30 PM is ideal
  • 🍯 It might look amber or honey-colored thanks to its low position and the way Earth’s atmosphere scatters the light
  • 🍓 The name “Strawberry Moon” comes from the berry-picking season, not the moon’s color (but we still think it sounds delicious)
  • 🌟 Look up and to the right to spot Antares, the bright red star in Scorpius, for a little extra night-sky sparkle

This is a rare one—your next chance to see a full moon this low won’t come until 2043. So grab a lawn chair, cue the fireflies, and enjoy the glow.

🚨 June 11, 1962 – The Great Alcatraz Escape (Still Unsolved!)

Sixty-three years ago this week, three prisoners pulled off one of the most legendary prison breaks in U.S. history—escaping the “inescapable” Alcatraz and vanishing without a trace.

Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin spent months secretly preparing. With nothing more than spoons, saw blades, and a lot of patience, they chiseled away at the crumbling concrete around the vents in their cells. Each night, they hid the noise with the sound of an accordion and covered their progress with cardboard painted to match the walls.

Behind those holes was a narrow maintenance corridor. They slipped through, climbed to a hidden workshop above the cell block, and there, in total secrecy, built a raft and life vests out of over 50 stolen raincoats—sealed with heat from the steam pipes. They also made dummy heads out of plaster, paint, and real human hair (snagged from the prison barbershop) to make it look like they were sleeping during bed checks.

On the night of June 11, 1962, the three men slipped through their tunnels, placed their fake heads on their pillows, climbed through the utility corridor, up a vent to the roof, and made their way down to the shoreline. Using a handmade concertina as a bellows, they inflated their raincoat raft, pushed off into the frigid waters of San Francisco Bay… and disappeared.

By morning, they were gone. The only clues? A paddle, a makeshift life vest, and some of their belongings found floating near Angel Island.

The FBI closed the case in 1979, concluding the men likely drowned. But the U.S. Marshals never stopped looking, and over the years, some strange things have kept the mystery very much alive:

  • 📷 A 1975 photo surfaced allegedly showing the Anglin brothers alive and well on a farm in Brazil. A facial recognition scan suggested a possible match—but nothing definitive.
  • 💐 The Anglin family received unsigned postcards and mysterious bouquets of flowers sent to their mother for years after the escape. No return address. No explanation.
  • 📞 One family member even got a mysterious phone call she believes came from one of the brothers.
  • ✉️ In 2013, a letter surfaced claiming to be from John Anglin, saying all three had survived. It offered a deal: medical care in exchange for surrender. The FBI tested it. The results? Inconclusive.

So did they make it? Did they quietly start new lives somewhere far away? Or did the bay take their story with it?

Nobody knows. But their escape—crafted with tools from a prison shop, sealed with steam pipes, and carried out under the cover of accordion music—remains one of the most brilliant (and baffling) jailbreaks of all time.

And it all started this week in 1962.

🍦 Scoop Up Summer Fun at the Ice Cream Social!

Mark your calendars and grab your spoons—Hudson’s sweetest summer tradition is back! Tickets are on sale now for the Ice Cream Social on Friday, June 13, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. on the Clocktower and Gazebo Greens.

This isn’t just a scoop-and-go situation. It’s a full evening of music, mingling, and your favorite frozen treats served up with a big dose of hometown charm.

🎟️ Tickets are available at:

  • The Learned Owl

  • Peace, Love and Little Donuts
  • Or just swing by and grab them at the event!

👉 Event details here

Did you know? Hudson’s very first Ice Cream Social was held all the way back in 1947, thanks to the Hudson League for Service. Proceeds from that first event helped fund art classes, library programs, children’s theater, and transportation for neighbors who needed a lift. So yes—you’re making a difference, one scoop at a time.

Bring your friends, bring your sweet tooth, and we’ll see you on the Green!

🎨 Salvador Dalí Lands in Hudson—Before NYC!

Hudson is about to make art history. Starting June 12, Peg’s Foundation & Gallery will debut “Dalí Beyond Time: Fashioning the Future”, an exhibition bringing 12 original Salvador Dalí paintings to American soil for the first time—and they’re starting right here in Hudson before heading to New York City.

These surrealist masterpieces, originally commissioned in 1971 by luxury menswear brand Scabal, offer a wildly imaginative take on what men’s fashion might look like in the year 2000. Fully restored and rarely seen—even in Europe—these works are vibrant, strange, and eerily relevant today.

🖼️ Exhibit Info
- Public Opening: June 12, 2025
- Dalí Paintings On View: June 12–July 5
- Student Work On View: June 12–September 27
- Location: Peg’s Foundation & Gallery, 53 First Street, Hudson
🔗 More info here

But this isn’t just an art show—it’s a full-blown collaboration between Peg’s Foundation, Scabal, and Kent State’s School of Fashion. Inspired by the same prompt Dalí received in the ’70s, Kent State students created futuristic fashion designs that are featured alongside the paintings. Think pleated pants that reveal butterflies, a flower-inspired skirt wired to move with the body, and suits that reinvent the concept of masculinity.

👗 A dozen student designs will remain on view through the fall, with six Dalí pieces staying behind after the originals head to NYC.

This project began with a single conversation between a fashion student and a tailoring executive—and turned into a once-in-a-lifetime international collaboration that blends mental health, fashion, art, and education.

This summer, Hudson won’t just be the place for patios and lemonade—it’ll be the only place in the country where you can stand face-to-face with Dalí’s vision of the future.

Don’t miss your chance to see it first.

🧐 Did You Know?

You physically can’t hum while holding your nose. Go ahead—give it a shot. We’ll wait…

Yeah. Weird, right? Turns out, humming requires air to escape through your nose. No airflow, no hum.

Stay curious, Hudson!

📅 The Scoop To-Do List

💥 Disasters of Hudson Walking Tour Returns June 10

Hudson might be known for its charm and cobblestone streets, but it’s seen its share of mayhem too. On Tuesday, June 10 at 10 a.m., take a step back into some of the town’s more dramatic moments with the Disasters of Hudson Walking Tour.

You’ll explore the downtown area and hear about the floods, fires, explosions, and accidents that shaped Hudson’s past—and in some cases, literally changed the look of the town. It’s part local history, part true crime, and all very Hudson.

👟 Meet at the library entrance
🌦️ Weather-dependent (so check the skies and dress accordingly)
🧢 Comfortable shoes highly encouraged!

📍 Space is limited, so be sure to register here.

Spoiler: You’ll never walk past the town green the same way again.

🎬 DOME Movies After Dark: Barbie on the Big (Curved) Screen

Barbie’s trading in Barbie Land for the shores of Lake Erie. On Thursday, June 12 at 6:00 p.m., Barbie (2023) hits the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater as part of the Great Lakes Science Center’s monthly “Movies After Dark” series.

This isn’t your average movie night. We're talking 116 minutes of full-on Barbiecore projected across a massive domed screen, with surround sound that practically puts you on the back of that sparkly pink convertible. Doors open 10 minutes before showtime, and seats are first-come, first-served.

The snack game? Strong. You’ll find all the movie must-haves like popcorn, candy, and hot pretzels, plus pizza and a full bar — because Barbie deserves options.

Tickets (with member discounts available) and more info right here.

🎬 Summer Movie Night in Kent – June 12 at Al Lease Park

Looking for a laid-back way to spend a summer evening? Kent’s kicking off its Summer Movie Nights series on Thursday, June 12 at 7:30 PM with a free outdoor movie at Al Lease Park (753 Silver Meadows Drive).

Just bring a blanket or lawn chair, settle in under the stars, and enjoy a family-friendly film with your neighbors. There’s free popcorn, plus a few fun extras from city departments that’ll be hanging out to add to the community vibe.

More movie nights are coming to Yacavona Park and Chadwick Park later this summer—but this is the first one, and the forecast’s looking friendly.

Bonus: no ticket required, just show up and enjoy the show.

🔥 Cleveland Public Theatre’s Golden Flame Invitation Blurs the Line Between Art and Audience

Looking for a theatrical experience that shakes things up—literally? Golden Flame Invitation, opening June 12 at Cleveland Public Theatre, might just be the most unconventional and emotionally immersive show you’ll see this summer.

This original production, created by Raymond Bobgan and the Cleveland CORE Ensemble, isn’t something you simply watch. It asks you to move, shift, and even travel to a different part of the building as the performance unfolds. Think of it as a guided emotional journey—with poetry, physical storytelling, and a whole lot of heart.

The show blends several surreal and symbolic stories, including:

  • A woman’s self-sacrifice to a dragon to restore her father’s sight
  • A forgotten land of flightless birds rediscovering the sky
  • A well-meaning inventor whose dream of equitable power spirals out of control

None of it connects in a linear way—and that’s the point. The common thread is a deep, human yearning to live with integrity, purpose, and connection.

You won’t sit still. You won’t walk away unaffected.

🏅 Hudson Track & Field Wraps Up a Strong State Meet

The Hudson Explorers wrapped up their 2025 track & field season with a strong showing at the OHSAA State Championships in Columbus—and let’s just say, they didn’t come home empty-handed.

🥉 Drake Vander Cica led the charge with a third-place finish in the shot put, launching a monster throw of 58'2" to snag a podium spot as just a sophomore. The kid’s got cannonballs for arms.

🏃‍♂️ Ryder Kessick capped off his senior season in style, clocking a 9:03.55 in the 3200M and finishing 7th in the state. That’s top-tier endurance and a top-10 medal to prove it.

🏃‍♂️ Crew McDaniel ran a tough race in the 1600M, placing 14th in the state with a time of 4:19.14—facing a field stacked with sub-4:15 runners.

💪 The boys 4x800 relay team finished 10th overall with a time of 7:50.64. They ran hard, fought through a brutal field, and missed the podium by just seconds.

On the girls’ side:

  • Alyssa Maniar jumped her way into the state finals in long jump and landed a 14th place finish with a leap of 17'0.25". She’s just a sophomore—keep an eye on her.
  • Ellie Miele ran 58.49 in the 400M prelims, placing 16th and closing out her high school career with a trip to Columbus.

And finally, Parker Maniar ran 14.48 in the 110M hurdles prelims—just outside of finals but still one of the fastest times in Hudson history.

State medals, top finishes, and a whole lot of pride. This crew showed what hard work, grit, and a little Hudson magic can do. Way to go, Explorers. 💙
