☀️ The Scoop on Hudson Weather

We’ve got a mostly sunny stretch ahead with just a few interruptions — think sunshine with a side of surprise. The weekend brings a chance of storms, but most days are looking warm, breezy, and summer-approved.

By midweek, things might get a little rowdy again in the sky, but overall, it’s a solid forecast for patios, parks, and anything involving flip-flops.

  • 🌞 Today (Friday, 6/20) – 81°/62°: Mostly sunny and mellow. (Finally, weather that lives up to your weekend plans.)
  • ⛈️ Saturday (6/21) – 78°/63°: Storms could roll in later. (Morning errands = smart. Afternoon hammock nap = risky.)
  • 🌤️ Sunday (6/22) – 79°/62°: Partly cloudy and pleasant. (The kind of day that calls for grilled something and a lemonade.)
  • 🌤️ Monday (6/23) – 82°/65°: Another partly cloudy beauty. (Perfect for being productive-ish.)
  • 🌤️ Tuesday (6/24) – 84°/67°: Warm with a few clouds. (A good day for cold brew, shade, and pretending to work outdoors.)
  • 🌦️ Wednesday (6/25) – 82°/66°: Scattered storms could pop up. (Bring the umbrella just in case, but cross your fingers it stays dry.)

Looks like summer is settling in — just with a few mood swings.

📰 Fresh Off the Clocktower

☀️ It’s the Summer Solstice—Let’s Soak It In

Today’s not just any Friday—it’s the summer solstice, which means we’re getting the longest stretch of daylight all year. If you’re wondering what exactly that means (beyond more time to grill and stay out late), here’s the lowdown.

The solstice marks the exact moment the sun reaches its highest point in the sky over the Northern Hemisphere. It happens once a year, usually around June 20 or 21. And despite the heat, Earth is actually farther from the sun right now than at any other time of year. Wild, right?

But here’s where it gets even more interesting:

  • 🌞 The word "solstice" means “sun stands still.”
It comes from Latin—sol (sun) + stitium (to stop). Around the solstice, the sun’s path across the sky pauses before reversing direction.

  • ⏱ It happens at the same moment for everyone on Earth.
Time zones make it feel different, but the solstice itself? It’s universal. A rare moment of shared sunlight.

  • 🌅 Today isn’t the earliest sunrise or the latest sunset.
That’s right—those happen on different days. Blame it on the tilt of the Earth and how we measure time. Still, you’re getting plenty of sunshine to make the most of.

  • 📍 The sun is directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer.
That’s about 1,600 miles south of Hudson. But still cool to know where that high-noon shadow really disappears.

  • 🌍 Above the Arctic Circle, it’s 24 hours of daylight.
Folks up north are literally basking in the midnight sun. Sounds dreamy—and possibly very confusing for sleep schedules.

💫 Bonus for stargazers:
Tonight’s a great time to catch the Milky Way’s glowing center if you’ve got a dark enough sky. Maybe not in downtown Hudson, but hey—might be worth a little drive.

In short:

Today’s the day the sun sticks around the longest. It’s all about the Earth’s tilt, not its distance, and it’s one of those natural rhythms worth pausing for.

So grab a lemonade, sit out a little longer, and let the extra daylight do its thing. Summer’s officially arrived.

🐶☀️ Double Feature: Sun’s Out, Dogs Are In

Not only is today (Friday, June 20) the summer solstice (aka the longest day of the year), it's also Take Your Dog to Work Day (aka the most adorable workday on the calendar).

The holiday started in 1999 thanks to Pet Sitters International, with a simple goal: spotlight dog adoption and make the workplace a little more joyful (and fluffier). Since then, it’s spread worldwide—and yes, it even counts if your “office” has a couch and a coffee table.

🐾 A Few Fun Facts

  • Dogs in the workplace have been shown to lower stress, boost morale, and make coworkers more collaborative. It's science!
  • The earliest versions of this day were focused on increasing pet adoption. That part’s still going strong.
  • Participation has grown globally—offices from the U.S. to Australia have gotten in on the fun.
  • Even home offices qualify. Your dog sleeping under your desk? That’s official Take Your Dog to Work behavior.

📸 We Want to See Your Working Dogs

Snap a quick photo of your pup at their post—lounging under the desk, snoozing in the Zoom background, or providing emotional support during spreadsheets.

Then send it our way: hello@hudsonscoop.com

We’ll feature a few standout “employees” in an upcoming issue of The Scoop.

Today’s all about soaking up extra daylight—and giving your dog a shot at middle management. Enjoy it. 🐾

🧬 CRISPR Just Changed Your Fruit Bowl

Let’s start with the big question:
What is CRISPR, and why is it suddenly all over your bananas and tomatoes?

CRISPR (pronounced crisper) is a super-precise gene-editing tool. Scientists use it like molecular scissors to tweak a plant’s existing DNA—no weird additives, no foreign genes, just tiny adjustments to help food stay fresh longer, taste better, or pack in more nutrition. And here’s the key thing: CRISPR-edited foods are not harmful, not artificial, and don’t come with strange side effects. They’ve been cleared by food safety agencies and are already showing up in countries like Japan and the U.S.

Now, let’s take a peek at what’s coming to your grocery cart:

🍌 Bananas That Don’t Brown
Ever opened a lunchbox to find a perfectly good banana that turned into a sad, brown lump? Scientists used CRISPR to switch off the enzyme that causes that. These bananas stay yellow and firm for hours after peeling—great for school lunches, snack trays, and avoiding food waste. Oh, and they taste exactly the same. Just... less squishy.

🍅 Tomatoes That Actually Taste Like Tomatoes
By gently editing two genes, researchers brought back the juicy sweetness we all wish store-bought tomatoes still had. These CRISPR-enhanced tomatoes have up to 30% more natural sugar—so they’re flavor-packed, not sugar-added.

☀️ Vitamin-D Tomatoes
One quick blast of UV light, and these gene-edited tomatoes generate as much vitamin D as a serving of tuna. That’s a win for anyone who’s low on sunshine or avoiding animal products. Again, same tomato—just doing more for your body.

🥗 Why It Matters

  • No chemicals or lab-grown weirdness—just nature, fine-tuned.
  • Fresher, tastier produce means less food in the trash and more on your plate.
  • Nutrition with zero extra effort? Yes, please.

CRISPR-edited foods aren’t science fiction—they’re real, safe, and already approved in multiple countries. And with benefits like these, don’t be surprised if your next salad tastes just a little bit better than you remembered.

We’ll keep you in the loop when these upgraded fruits and veggies start showing up locally. Until then, feel free to brag about your newfound food science knowledge at your next cookout.

🧐 Did You Know?

The Hoover Dam used so much concrete during construction that you could wrap it all the way around the Earth at the equator. Yep—enough to build a sidewalk circling the entire globe. It also took the concrete five years to fully cure!

Stay curious, Hudson!
