đ Locals We Love: American Fireworks
Everyone in Hudson knows American Fireworks. Theyâve been around since 1902, helping families light up backyards and bringing those big, breathtaking displays that stop us all in our tracks.
Theyâre the team behind Hudsonâs Independence Day show at Barlow Farm Park and the Winter Fireworks downtown during the holiday season. Year after year, they make our cityâs celebrations feel a little more magicalâand a lot more memorable.
Theyâre open late this week tooâuntil midnight on Tuesday and Wednesdayâso youâve got plenty of time to stock up and make your holiday sparkle.
Hereâs to the crew that keeps Hudsonâs skies bright, festive, and safe. We see you, and we appreciate you!
đ° Fresh Off the Clocktower
đ Asteroid Day: A Cosmic Blast from the Past
Today (June 30) is Asteroid Day, marking the anniversary of one of Earthâs strangest and most powerful natural events. On this day in 1908, a huge space rockâestimated to be about 160â200 feet wideâexploded over the remote forests of Siberia.
The blast was so intense it flattened about 80 million trees across nearly 800 square miles. People living more than 40 miles away were knocked off their feet, and windows shattered hundreds of miles from ground zero.
Eyewitnesses described a blinding flash and a thunderous boom that shook the ground. Yet, despite the incredible forceâroughly 1,000 times stronger than the Hiroshima bombâno crater was ever found. Scientists believe the asteroid disintegrated mid-air, unleashing a shockwave that did the damage.
The Tunguska explosion remains the largest impact-related event in recorded history. Over a century later, the site is still studied, still mysterious, and still a powerful reminder of just how wild our planet (and universe) can be.
đą Perk Up Your Garden with Free Coffee Grounds
Turns out your morning brew isnât just good for waking you upâitâs great for your garden, too. Used coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other nutrients that help plants grow strong, keep pests like slugs and ants at bay, and attract earthworms that boost soil health.
Starbucks has a program called Grounds for Your Garden where they give away used coffee grounds for free. Just scoop them into your compost pile or sprinkle around nitrogen-hungry plants like tomatoes and leafy greens. They also improve soil structure and help lock in moistureâperfect for summer gardening.
Hereâs the catch: the Hudson Starbucks doesnât officially participate, but if you call early, they might set some aside for you. If you want an easy win, head to the Starbucks at 1006 Graham Rd in Cuyahoga Falls. They regularly offer grounds and theyâre open 24 hours, so you can grab a bag (and maybe a latte) anytime.
Your plants will thank you.
đ Fireworks Safety & Rules in Hudson
The Fourth of July is almost here, and while weâre all about celebrating with a little sparkle, we want everyone to stay safe. Before you stock up on fireworks, hereâs what you need to know.
â When & Where: You can set off consumer-grade fireworks July 3â5 from 4 p.m.â11 p.m., but only on private property (with the ownerâs permission). Parks, streets, and public spaces? Off-limits.
đŤ Whatâs Not Cool: Professional-grade fireworks require a permit. And lighting fireworks while under the influence? Thatâs illegalâand dangerous.
đĽ Safety First: Adults only, keep kids at least 150 ft away from aerial fireworks, never relight duds, and soak used fireworks before tossing. Sparklers burn hotter than you thinkâsupervise closely.
Have fun, stay safe, and letâs keep Hudson sparkling (for all the right reasons) this holiday!
đ Help Clean Up After the Fireworks!
After Hudsonâs big fireworks show, we want to keep Barlow Farm Park looking great â and we could use a few extra hands. The City is looking for volunteers to help pick up trash and debris on Sunday, July 6, usually from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
If youâd like to pitch in, sign up here. Youâll get an email with details on where to meet and what to expect.

đ§ Did You Know?
Orcas have been caught on camera doing something pretty adorable: using kelp as grooming tools. They bite off pieces of bull kelp and rub them over their bodiesâlike a spa day in the ocean! Scientists think it helps them keep clean and bond with other whales.
Stay curious, Hudson!
