š§ Did You Know?
A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russiaās Kamchatka Peninsula this week triggered tsunami waves that reached as far as Japan and Hawaii.
Despite waves reaching up to 16 feet along parts of the Russian coast, no deaths were reportedāand only minor injuries and coastal flooding occurred, thanks to quick alerts and fast-acting evacuation systems.
Tsunamis are rare, but when they happen, theyāre one of Earthās most powerful and awe-inspiring forces. Here are some wild facts:
š Tsunami waves can reach speeds of up to 500 mph in open waterāabout as fast as a jet airplane.
š„ļø In deep ocean, tsunamis can pass under ships without being noticed. They only grow in height when they hit shallow coastal waters.
š§ Most tsunamis are triggered by underwater earthquakes, but they can also come from volcanoes, landslides, or even meteor impacts.
šļø The word ātsunamiā comes from Japanese and means āharbor wave.ā
ā³ Some tsunami waves can travel thousands of miles across ocean basins with very little loss of energy.
šØ Warning signs can include a sudden retreat of the sea, ground shaking, or strange ocean soundsālike a roaring or sucking noise.
Theyāre a rare but powerful reminder that the planet is always shiftingāquietly, constantly, and sometimes dramatically.
Stay curious, Hudson!
