☀️ The Scoop on Hudson Weather

Hope you’re into warm breezes and sunshine, because this forecast is practically a love letter to summer. Highs in the upper 80s and low 90s, barely a cloud with commitment issues, and just enough humidity to remind you it’s August. It’s giving: iced coffee, porch swings, and “wait, is the pool still open?”

    Let’s break it down:

    • Today (Friday, Aug 8) – 85°/64°: Partly cloudy with a soft breeze. (Peak summer chill — ideal for a patio lunch or an early-evening stroll.)
    • Saturday, Aug 9 – 89°/66°: Warm and mostly dry. (A good day for grilling… or regretting you didn’t buy more popsicles.)
    • 🌞 Sunday, Aug 10 – 91°/68°: Mostly sunny and spicy. (Do not forget sunscreen unless you want a tank top tan.)
    • 🌞 Monday, Aug 11 – 91°/70°: More sun, more warmth. (This is your reminder to water the garden and yourself.)
    • Tuesday, Aug 12 – 89°/70°: Partly cloudy with a tiny rain chance. (But nothing that’ll ruin your hammock nap.)
    • Wednesday, Aug 13 – 86°/67°: Another mild mix of clouds and sunshine. (A “maybe we should finally mow the lawn” kind of day.)
    • ⛈️ Thursday, Aug 14 – 86°/67°: Thunderstorms possible in the afternoon. (Just enough drama to keep the weather interesting.)
    • Friday, Aug 15 – 86°/66°: Back to partly cloudy and comfortable. (Start planning those weekend plans early.)

So yeah… this week’s weather is basically your reminder to soak it all in while summer’s still putting on a show.

🐾 Scoop of the Litter: Frosty

Frosty’s been at the rescue for five months now, quietly waiting for the right person to come along—someone who gets that not every cat is a lap-hopper on day one.

She’s 9 years old, loves to play, and when she trusts you, she’ll greet you with cuddles. But the noise and chaos of rescue life can be a lot for her, and she tends to get overstimulated when things don’t slow down. What she really needs is a calm home and a person who’s willing to give her the time and space to feel safe again.

If you’re the kind of human who appreciates quiet companionship, gentle progress, and earning a cat’s affection the honest way, Frosty might just be your girl.

You can meet her at One of a Kind Pets, 1929 West Market Street, Akron, OH 44313.

She’s been waiting patiently—maybe for you.

📰 Fresh Off the Clocktower

🐾📚 Cats, Courts, and Chocolate: Today’s Unofficial (but Way More Fun) Holidays

It’s Friday, August 8, and the universe clearly wants us to celebrate. From four-legged queens to peanut butter s’mores, today’s lineup is a certified vibe.

🐱 International Cat Day
Give your cat an extra treat, a warm sunbeam, or a cardboard box to sit in like royalty. Today’s about honoring all the felines who make our lives better—on their terms, of course. We’re also giving a quick shoutout to Frosty, who you met in today’s Scoop of the Litter. She’s been keeping things interesting at the rescue and deserves a moment in the spotlight.

🏓 National Pickleball Day
Perfect excuse to head over to Barlow Farm Park and get a few matches in. The courts are calling, and the weather’s dialed in for low-stress dinking and friendly competition. Bonus points for dramatic victory celebrations.

📚 National Book Lovers Day (officially Saturday, but who’s waiting?)
Stop by The Learned Owl Book Shop or browse the aisles at Hudson Library—it’s a great weekend to rediscover your favorite genre or start that book everyone’s been talking about. Reading with a cat nearby is highly encouraged.

🔥 National S’mores Day (Sunday)
Go ahead and prep now, because once you try s’mores with a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup instead of chocolate, there’s no turning back. They’re messy. They’re magical. They’re your new favorite summer treat.

This weekend is made for soft paws, surprise plot twists, and chocolate-covered fingers. Enjoy it, Hudson.

🌕 Stargazing Alert: Planet Parade Incoming

Heads up, early birds and night owls — the sky is throwing a full-on cosmic parade this weekend, and you’ve got front row seats (no ticket required).

On Sunday, August 10, just before sunrise, six planets will line up in the eastern sky: Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The first four will be bright enough to spot with the naked eye, while Uranus and Neptune might need a pair of binoculars or a small telescope.

This kind of alignment doesn’t come around often, and it's a pretty magical excuse to step outside, look up, and feel very small in the best possible way.

Coffee optional. Wonder guaranteed.

🏛️ Hudson Council Catch-Up: Kennels, Calendars & Community Chat

This week’s city council meeting wasn’t flashy, but it had plenty of heart—and a few bark-worthy moments.

Residents showed up in force for a public hearing on proposed changes to the rules around veterinary facilities and boarding kennels. Concerns about noise, odor, public health, and property values were front and center, especially when it comes to large kennels near neighborhoods. Community suggestions? Increase setbacks. Limit the number of animals. Add soundproofing. Keep inspections tight. Council members listened carefully, noted the passion in the room, and clarified that some existing facilities are grandfathered in.

Meanwhile, a feel-good update came from the baseball exchange program with Hudson’s sister city in Germany. Students are heading our way soon, and local families have stepped up to host. (Home runs and bratwurst? We’re here for it.)

A few quick hits:

  • 📊 The parks survey is still open—if you’ve got thoughts, the city wants to hear them.
  • Take the survey here.
  • 🌐 Council gave the green light to pursue bids for the Fiber to the Home internet buildout. High-speed is coming!

Oh, and friendly reminder: school starts soon. Council wants drivers to slow down and stay alert in school zones. So consider this your cue to ease off the gas and resist the urge to pass a bus because you're “just running late.”

Bottom line? Residents are engaged, council is listening, and there’s progress on everything from dog noise to faster Wi-Fi.

Stay tuned—and stay vocal, Hudson. City Hall’s got a seat for you.

🚗 Heads-Up, Hudson: Driver’s Ed Rules Are Changing

If you’ve got a teen, a college kid, or someone in the “I’ll get my license eventually” phase, listen up: starting September 30, Ohio’s changing the rules for new drivers under 21.

Right now, if you’re 18 to 20, you can skip the full driver’s ed program and go the shortcut route. But that loophole is closing.

Come fall, anyone under 21 will need to complete:

  • 24 hours of classroom training
  • 8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction
  • 50 supervised driving hours, with 10 at night

It’s the same full program younger teens already take—and the goal is safety. Stats show 18–19-year-olds are involved in a ton of serious crashes each year, and state officials want to make sure every new driver hits the road with more real-world experience.

So if someone in your house has been putting off the whole driving thing, now’s a good time to shift into gear—before the rules (and the price tag) change.

🥬 Fresh Pickin’ at Case-Barlow

Need a midweek veggie refresh? The Case-Barlow Farm Stand is open every Wednesday from 4–6 PM with fresh local produce like tomatoes, beans, lettuce, herbs, garlic, peppers, zucchini, and more. Root beer too? You bet. Non-cash payments are accepted during those hours.

Can’t make it Wednesday? No worries—the Honor System Stand is open Thursday through Sunday. Just pull into the gravel drive, grab what you need from the side porch fridge, and drop your payment in the black box on the fence. Easy, honest, and always fresh.

🌱 Located at 1931 Barlow Road, the stand is a simple but mighty way to support local farming—and stock your kitchen with the good stuff.

Just don’t forget cash if you're swinging by after Wednesday!

🧐 Did You Know?

By the time they’re just 6 to 9 weeks old, kittens develop something incredible: the righting reflex, which allows them to twist mid-air and land on their feet during a fall.

Cats don’t have collarbones like humans do—their shoulders are attached by muscle, not bone. That makes their bodies flexible enough to rotate 180° in mid-air.

They use a specific sequence: head turns first, then spine, then rear legs. Their tail helps with balance, and they bend their legs to absorb the landing.

😼 A cat's spine contains more vertebrae than a human’s, giving them extreme agility and shock absorption.

📉 While not all cats land perfectly, studies have shown that some cats survive high-rise falls with surprisingly few injuries—thanks to this reflex and their instinct to spread out like a parachute.

It’s not magic—it’s feline physics. And it kicks in before they’ve even hit their first birthday cake.

Stay curious, Hudson!

📅 The Scoop To-Do List

🎬 Movie Night in Cuyahoga Falls? Don’t Miss This One

Flix on the Falls is back tonight in downtown Cuyahoga Falls—and they’re serving up a perfect summer evening with Inside Out 2 on the big screen.

Festivities kick off at 6:30 PM with live music, bounce houses, food trucks, themed activities, and photo ops to keep the whole crew entertained before the movie rolls in at dusk. It’s free, it’s festive, and the setup in the amphitheater couldn’t be better for a night under the stars.

If you’re feeling spontaneous, grab a blanket, your favorite movie snack (or just hit up the trucks), and head to 2085 Front Street. It’s not far from Hudson, and totally worth the drive.

Big screen. Big feelings. Big fun.

🐾 Chasing Trails: A Puppy Playground Worth the Drive

Hudson pet parents, heads-up: if your dog’s been doing laps around the coffee table, it might be time for a bigger playground. Chasing Trails Dog Enrichment Center in Parma offers a private, indoor dog gym—complete with agility toys, puzzles, climbing structures, and even a doggie treadmill.

It’s a bit of a drive from Hudson (you’ll find it at 5735 Chevrolet Blvd in Parma) but for pups with energy to burn, it just might be worth the mileage.

Even better? They’re hosting a Grand Opening Open House this Saturday, August 9, from 2–6 p.m. (humans only for this one). You can tour the space, meet the team, and get all the details before booking your dog’s first romp.

Curious what all the tail-wagging is about? Check it out here.

🌊 River Party, Cleveland-Style

If you're looking for something fun, free, and full of riverfront vibes this weekend — head up to Cleveland for the Cuyahoga River Rally on Saturday, August 9 at Hart Crane Memorial Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This celebration of the Cuyahoga’s revival is packed with good stuff:

The Festival Village opens at 11 a.m., and the whole day is designed to show off how far the Cuyahoga has come (spoiler: it’s thriving).

You can check out the full schedule and sign up for activities right here.

🛍 Kent Flea & Makers Market This Saturday

Looking to spice up your Saturday stroll? The Kent Flea & Makers Market is back this Saturday, August 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the historic Marvin Kent Home (409 W. Main St, Kent).

This isn’t your average flea—think local makers, food trucks, live music, and a treasure trove of handcrafted finds and vintage gems. It’s part market, part festival, and fully fun.

Admission’s free, the vibes are high, and the finds are anything but ordinary. Want to check out the vendor list or sneak a peek at what’s coming? Click here.

🖼 Hidden Treasures in Cleveland This Saturday

This Saturday, August 9, something quietly magical is happening on the 5th floor of the Cleveland Twist Drill Building. The 4th Annual Artists at the Twist Open Studios runs from 12–5 p.m., and it’s the kind of art-filled afternoon that surprises your soul—in the best way.

Imagine wandering through the working studios of painters, printmakers, jewelers, sculptors, textile artists, woodworkers, and more—all sharing their creative process in one air-conditioned, elevator-accessible space with free parking and free admission.

Plus, new this year: artist talks at 1, 2, and 3 p.m. offer a rare peek behind the curtain on creativity in motion.

If you’re ready to see art in the making and meet the people behind it, check out all the details here.

✨ Super Star Party: Cosmic Mysteries Await

This Saturday night, it’s lights out and heads up—because the stars are putting on a show. The annual Super Star Party is blasting off at Penitentiary Glen Reservation from 7–11 p.m., and it’s got something for everyone who’s ever looked up and thought, “Whoa.”

From telescope views of deep space to glow-in-the-dark crafts, this family-friendly bash is all about exploring the mysteries of the cosmos—right here in Northeast Ohio.

Here’s what’s in orbit:

  • 🔭 Gaze through pro telescopes with the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society
  • 🚶‍♀️ Take a night hike through the woods under a blanket of stars
  • 🌌 Step into the StarLab Portable Planetarium (because the universe is cooler in 360°)
  • 🦉 Meet live animals, ride the mini train, and try out scavenger hunts & space games
  • 🍿 Fuel up with popcorn and snacks from the Nature Store

Tickets are $8 per person (ages 2+), and registration is required. Kids under 2 are free, but still welcome to stargaze like pros.

Want the full mission brief, launch details, and ticket link? You’ll find it all here.

Let’s be honest: if your weekend plans don’t include planetariums, mini trains, and a sky full of stars... you might need to re-evaluate your orbit.

🛍 Treasure Hunting at the Beachland Flea

If your idea of a perfect Sunday includes vintage vibes, vinyl records, and one-of-a-kind finds—consider your weekend plans handled.

The Beachland Flea is popping up this Sunday, August 10 at the iconic Beachland Ballroom from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Expect a colorful mix of local artists, vintage vendors, handmade goods, old-school tees, records, jewelry, and retro oddities you didn’t know you needed (until now).

It’s free to attend, and the energy is always part flea market, part art show, part neighborhood hangout. If you’re into cool stuff made by cool people—or just need a quirky gift or two—you’ll find it here.

Details and directions live here.

🥒 Akron Pickle Fest Is Kind of a Big Dill

If you’ve been craving a Sunday with a little more crunch, this is it. Akron Pickle Fest is taking over Lock 3 this Sunday, August 10, from 10 AM to 5 PM—and honestly, it might be the most ridiculous (and ridiculously fun) day of the summer.

We're talking pickle everything:

  • Pickle vendors
  • Pickle-themed food
  • Pickle games like bobbing, tossing, and yes—greased pickle relays
  • Even a pickle eating contest (because of course there is)

It’s free to attend, weird in the best way, and just a short drive from Hudson. If you're into festivals with personality, this one’s got brine and shine.

🧃 Want to see the full lineup of events and vendors? Click here for the dill-tails.

🎹 Billy Joel Songs, But Make It Blossom

This Sunday, August 10, Blossom Music Center is trading fireflies for ivory keys. The Cleveland Orchestra is teaming up with vocalist and pianist Tony DeSare for a night of Billy Joel’s biggest hits—think Piano Man, Uptown Girl, Vienna, and Only the Good Die Young—all with a full orchestra behind them.

It’s part concert, part love letter to the ‘70s and ‘80s, and fully guaranteed to have someone in your group singing along by the second verse.

Tickets start at $54, and honestly? That’s a pretty sweet deal for an evening of music under the stars.

You can grab details and tickets here.

Because summer isn’t over till someone belts out“Sing us a song, you’re the piano man…”under a picnic blanket.
